2020 Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Diabetes Research Award

Bernard Zinman, OC, MDCM, FRCPC, FACP, is the recipient of the 2020 Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Diabetes Research Award. This award recognizes exceptional contributions in patient-oriented clinical outcomes research that have had a significant impact on diabetes prevention and treatment.
Dr. Zinman is professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and the Stephen and Suzie Pustil Diabetes Research Scientist at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada. Dr. Zinman’s main research interests include the long-term complications of diabetes mellitus, the evaluation of new therapies for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and diabetes in Aboriginal communities.
Dr. Zinman is the recipient of numerous awards including the Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes and the Frederick G. Banting Award of the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). In 2006, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Outstanding Physician Clinician Award, and in 2009 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the CDA and the Novartis Prize in Diabetes. In November 2011, Dr. Zinman was appointed to the Order of Canada, in recognition of his achievements in diabetes patient care and research. In 2019, he was promoted to officer in the Order of Canada. He has authored more than 550 publications in national and international journals.
