Elizabeth Selvin, PhD, MPH, is the recipient of the 2020 Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement
in Epidemiology. This award recognizes significant contributions to the field of diabetes epidemiology. Dr. Selvin will deliver the Kelly West Award Lecture on Sunday, June 14.
Dr. Selvin is a professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and holds a joint appointment in the School of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine. Her research has provided pivotal information on key clinical issues in diabetes epidemiology, with significant influence on clinical guidelines in laboratory medicine, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In addition, Dr. Selvin’s work provided key data informing diagnostic criteria for diabetes and prediabetes.
Dr. Selvin is the author or coauthor of over 350 papers in the peer-reviewed literature including landmark studies in New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and other major medical journals. She has devoted her career to leading translational research projects designed to evaluate and improve screening, diagnosis, and care for people with diabetes. In 2013, she was awarded the Harry Keen Memorial Award by the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group. Since the start of her academic career, Dr. Selvin has been continually funded as a principal investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health. She has mentored over 40 students and fellows, many of whom are now leaders in the field.
