Raghu G. Mirmira, MD, PhD

Currently, Dr. Mirmira serves as Professor of Medicine, Vice Chair for Research, and Co-Director of the Diabetes Research and Training Center at The University of Chicago. His discoveries ranged from the earliest identification of monomeric insulin analogs with ultra-rapid-acting kinetics to the establishment of the β cell stress as a potentiator of autoimmune diabetes. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and over his career has held prestigious grant awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, JDRF, ADA, and the NIH.

As the Eli Lilly & Co. Professor at Indiana University, he established the Indiana Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases and led it to NIH funding as a Diabetes Research Center. He also served as the Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program at Indiana, and in these roles created an environment that promoted basic and translational research that fostered and championed the careers of junior scientists.  At the University of Chicago, Dr. Mirmira fosters an environment for training that includes a funded training program for future physician scientists and a Diabetes Center that leverages institutional and NIH support that extends throughout the Chicago and Milwaukee areas.

Dr. Mirmira’s former trainees number over 40, and includes students and postdoctoral fellows, many who have made outstanding discoveries and achieved exceptional funding and national recognition, including the ADA’s Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award. As a physician scientist, Dr. Mirmira continues to provide patient care, lead an internationally recognized research program in islet biology, and train the future generation of diabetes researchers.
