Edwin Bierman Lecture Award
Darren K. McGuire, MD, MHSc, is the recipient of the 2024 Edwin Bierman Award. This award recognizes a leading scientist who has made outstanding contributions in the field of diabetes-related macrovascular complications and related risk factors. Dr. McGuire will deliver the Edwin Bierman Award Lecture on Friday, June 21st, at ADA’s 84th Scientific Sessions.
Darren K. McGuire, MD, MHSc, is a general cardiologist in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and a clinical trialist with expertise in large-scale CV outcomes trial design and execution, and drug registration/regulation, with a focus on diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He is a Distinguished Teaching Professor of Medicine with Tenure, is the Jere H. Mitchell, MD, Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Science and is the Lead Physician of the Parkland Health Cardiology Clinics. Dr. McGuire has participated in numerous international cardiovascular clinical outcomes trials, including T2DM, obesity, and lipid trials. Dr. McGuire is a previous member of the FDA Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee. He is Deputy Editor of Circulation, Senior Editor of Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research, and co-editor of the textbook Diabetes in Cardiovascular Disease: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease. Dr. McGuire has authored/co-authored over 480 peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, editorials, and book chapters and is recognized as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher.

Norbert Freinkel Lecture Award
Professor Fidelma Dunne MD, PhD, FRCP, FRCPI, MRIA, is the recipient of the 2024 Norbert Freinkel Award. This award honors a researcher who has made outstanding contributions to the understanding and treatment of diabetes in pregnancy. Dr. Dunne will deliver the Norbert Freinkel Award Lecture on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at ADA’s 84th Scientific Sessions.
Fidelma Dunne is a Professor of Medicine at University of Galway Ireland, and Consultant Endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals. Professor Dunne is immediate past President of the IADPSG (2016–2022), President of the Irish Endocrine Society (2021–2024), National Specialty Director for Endocrinology training (2023–2026), and Adjunct Professor at Steno Diabetes Research Centre in Odense, Denmark (2020–2025). She was a Fulbright scholar (2014–2015) at Columbia University New York and served two terms on the executive board of the Irish Medical Council. Currently she is Director of the Institute of Clinical Trials at the University of Galway and Lead for the All Ireland Clinical Trial Network in Diabetes.
Her research interest in diabetes and pregnancy spans 30 years with >250 peer review publications. She was awarded the Jorgen Pedersen award from DPSG in 2021 and has been elected as member to the prestigious Royal Irish Academy in 2024. She initiated the ATLANTIC DIP network which established key metrics for Diabetes in pregnancy nationally and shaped clinical and research practice. She has completed the EMERGE trial of Metformin in pregnancies complicated by GDM (JAMA 2023) and is currently conducting the longitudinal follow-up of EMERGE women and their children.
During COVID she established the INSPIRE group which completed a number of core outcome sets (COS) and patient reported outcomes (PRO) with global international participation using a virtual platform, and these are now used internationally. In addition, she has been involved in the DALI, CONCEPTT, EVOLVE and EXPECT trial programmes which have influenced clinical practice globally.

Roger Pecoraro Lecture Award
Professor Frances L. Game BSc, MBBCh (Hons), MRCPath, FRCP, is the recipient of the 2024 Roger Pecoraro Award. This award recognizes a researcher who has made scientific contributions and demonstrates an untiring commitment to improving the understanding of the detection, treatment, and prevention of diabetic foot complications. Professor Game will deliver the Roger Pecoraro Award Lecture on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at ADA’s 84th Scientific Sessions.
Professor Fran Game has been a consultant Diabetologist at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust since 2011. She is the Clinical Director of R&D and the Derby Clinical Trials Support Unit, and Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham. Her main clinical and research interest is the Diabetic Foot, leading a number of multicentre/multinational trials in this field. She chaired both the Classification and Wound Healing subgroups of the International Working Group of the Diabetic Foot for the 2023 guidelines, has been a member of the Editorial Board of this organisation for the last 4 years and is the incoming Chair from January 2024.
She is the current Clinical Lead for the National Diabetes Foot Audit of England and Wales and has been one of the NHS England Co-Clinical Directors for Diabetes, East Midlands since May 2018. She was awarded the Edward James Olmos Award for Amputation Prevention by the American Limb Preservation Society in 2021.

Richard R. Rubin Lecture Award
Paula M. Trief, PhD, is the recipient of the 2024 Richard R. Rubin Lecture Award. This award recognizes a researcher who has made scientific contributions and demonstrates an untiring commitment to improving the understanding of the detection, treatment, and prevention of diabetic foot complications. Dr. Trief will deliver the Roger Pecoraro Award Lecture on Friday, June 21, 2024 at ADA’s 84th Scientific Sessions.
Dr. Paula Trief received her AB degree from the University of Rochester, and her MS and PhDs in Clinical Psychology from Syracuse University. She remained in Syracuse NY and, for 14 years, she served in clinical leadership roles, serving as the Director of the LeMoyne College Counseling Center, and then of the Dept of Behavioral Medicine at St. Camillus Health and Rehabilitation Center. She joined the faculty at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in 1993, as an Assistant Professor, was awarded tenure in 1997, promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 2004, and to the rank of Distinguished Service Professor, the highest academic rank in the SUNY system, in 2018. She has held many roles at Upstate, most recently serving as the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development from 2006-2017. She has served as a Behavioral Consultant and Advisory Board Member of the SUNY Upstate Joslin Diabetes Center since 1997, and as a consulting researcher in the CDTR of Einstein Medical Center since 2019. She is on the editorial boards of the Annals of Behavioral Medicine and the Journal of Behavioral Medicine.

Congratulations 2024 WIN ADA Award Recipient!
Francine R. Kaufman, MD, is the recipient of the 2024 Lois Jovanovic Transformative Woman in Diabetes Award. This award recognizes a woman who has made a significant impact in diabetes care, research, education, or public health. Dr. Kaufman will give remarks at the Women’s Interprofessional Network of the American Diabetes Association (WIN ADA) reception on Friday, June 21, 2024.
Francine R. Kaufman, MD, is a Distinguished Professor Emerita of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and prior Division Head of Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She is currently the Chief Medical Officer of Senseonics, Inc. (2019–present) and a diabetes consultant. Previously, she was the CMO and VP of Global Clinical, Medical and Regulatory Affairs at Medtronic Diabetes (2009–2019). She has authored over 290 articles, and numerous books including Diabesity (Bantam, 2005), The Medical Management of Type 1 Diabetes (ADA, 2008), The Insulin Pump and Continuous Glucose Monitoring Book: For Patients, Parents and Caregivers (ADA, 2012, 2017) and Rhythms (a novel) (CKI Publisher, 2015). She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2005 and is a past president of the American Diabetes Association (2002–2003).
