2021 Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award

Kristen J. Nadeau, MD, MS

Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award Lecture
"Unique Cardiometabolic Mechanisims and Consequences of Youth-Onset Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes"

Kristen J. Nadeau, MD, MS, is the recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award. This prestigious award recognizes research in diabetes that demonstrates independence of thought and originality. Dr. Nadeau will present the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award Lecture on Monday, June 28.

Currently research director for the Pediatric Endocrinology and Bariatric Surgery Programs at the University of Colorado, Dr. Nadeau focuses on understanding mechanisms of youth-onset diabetes, obesity, and insulin resistance, including sex differences and racial/ethnic disparities, to prevent long-term diabetes complications. Her lab uses gold-standard but minimally invasive methods to study insulin sensitivity and secretion, and comprehensive cardio-hepato-renal-metabolic phenotyping in youth.

Through her roles as pediatric chair of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) RISE study of β-cell preservation in youth and adults, and a cardiorenal/metabolic outcomes leader of the NIDDK TODAY trial of youth-onset type 2 diabetes, Dr. Nadeau has demonstrated that youth-onset type 2 diabetes is more aggressive and treatment-resistant than in adults. Dr. Nadeau is addressing this critical problem as co-principle investigator of the ST2OMP study, which is evaluating mechanistic outcomes of bariatric surgery in youth-onset type 2 diabetes, and as coinvestigator of a National Institutes of Health study on preventing future gestational diabetes in American Indian girls.

Dr. Nadeau’s career was recently recognized by a University of Wisconsin Medical School Distinguished Alumni Award and election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Please join us in celebrating Kristen J. Nadeau, MD, MS, for her transformative contributions to basic and translational diabetes research.
