John B. Buse, MD, PhD, is the Verne S. Caviness Distinguished Professor, director of the Diabetes Center, and co-director of the NC Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He received his MD and PhD from Duke University before training in internal medicine and endocrinology at the University of Chicago. Dr. Buse completed service as president for medicine & science at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2008. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 2010 Castle Connolly National Physician of the Year Award and the 2019 ADA Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Diabetes Research Award, as well as authored more than 500 publications. Dr. Buse currently works with research teams in multicenter studies of diabetes and obesity treatment, in translating basic science innovation to clinical application, and in exploring the safety and efficacy of treatments using real-world evidence.
