Prof. Rury R. Holman, MB.ChB., FRCP (Lond.), FMedSci, is a clinician scientist who trained in medicine at the United Kingdom (UK) University of Bristol. He founded the University of Oxford Diabetes Trials Unit in 1985 and was appointed as the first University of Oxford professor of diabetic medicine in 1998. In 2003, he became the founding academic chairman of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, subsequently becoming the Diabetes Theme Leader for the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research’s (NIHR) Oxford Biomedical Research Centre. He was an honorary consultant physician to the University of Oxford’s NHS Hospitals Trust which cares for people with diabetes for over 45 years of age. Professor Holman designed and ran numerous pivotal translational and large-scale investigator-led clinical outcome trials, including the UK Prospective Diabetes Study. He has published over 500 papers, is a fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, an emeritus NIHR senior investigator, and emeritus professor of diabetic medicine.
