Barbara Kahn is the George Minot professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and vice chair for research strategy at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Her pioneering research has elucidated molecular mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes and the role of adipocytes in regulating systemic insulin sensitivity. Kahn’s dedication to mentorship, advocacy, and leadership has left an indelible mark on the diabetes/metabolism research field. She has trained a cadre of scientists who are pushing the boundaries of diabetes/metabolism research worldwide. Many are department chairs, division chiefs, and institute directors inspiring the next generation of diabetes scientists. As ADA Meetings oversight committee chair, Kahn strategically increased visibility of junior scientists. While on NIDDK/NIH Advisory Council, Kahn helped shape NIDDK’s strategic plan, including retaining under-represented scientists in diabetes/metabolism research.
Kahn is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine. She received the ADA OSA-Award and Banting Medal. Kahn is a role model for women in science and has had a tremendous impact on not only the biological sciences, but also on the many people who benefit from the knowledge, environment, and networks she created.
