Living with Diabetes: Ask the Experts Q&A Series

Encourage your patients to join a FREE, educational Ask the Experts Q&A series created to help tackle issues commonly faced by people living with diabetes and wondering about the relationship between diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and heart failure. Participants ask questions —online or on the phone—in a live Q&A with ADA diabetes experts. All events start at 2:00 P.M. ET and last about an hour. Learn more and direct your patients to register at diabetes.org/experts4ERP. You can also encourage your patients to listen to recordings of past events on their own time at diabetes.org/experts4ERP.

Nutrition Scientific Review Committee 

In 2018, the American Diabetes Association selected 12 nutrition experts to identify, rigorously review and debate current research to inform the Association in best practices for medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education as it relates to diabetes. This group will update the 2013 Nutrition Therapy Recommendations for the Management of Adults with Diabetes to reflect the latest research findings. Updates to the statement will be released early 2019.

Diabetes Placemats 

The placemat is a simple guide to planning meals and managing portions. The front features full-color photos of actual-sized plates and portions (½ plate non-starchy vegetables, ¼ plate protein, and ¼ plate starchy vegetable or grain) along with examples of foods in each category. The back side of the placemat provides simple tools for estimating portions and choosing healthy fats. The placemat is now available in seven different versions to accommodate different cultures and cuisine preferences: Classic, Southern, Hispanic, Vegetarian, Asian, Indian, and Pacific Islander.

Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes - The American Diabetes Association publishes the Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes annually. These rigorously reviewed recommendations provide clinicians with guidance to prevent and treat diabetes and its complications. In addition to the full Standards of Care, an abridged version edited by primary care providers for primary care providers, is available.

The American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association have partnered as part of the Know Diabetes by Heart™ initiative, with the goal to reduce cardiovascular death, heart attack, stroke, and heart failure in people living with type 2 diabetes.The Know Diabetes by Heart™ initiative provides health care professionals with resources focused on the link between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes.
