Research Description



The importance of improvement in overnight (fasting) glucose levels versus post-meal glucose levels on improving mildly or greatly elevated HbA1c values in children and adults with type 1 diabetes has not been studied. The Star-3 database would allow us to evaluate which of the two values (fasting versus post-meal) relate more to improvement in HbA1c levels (=0.5%) for people with HbA1c values of 9.0-9.5%, 8.0-8.9% or 7.0-7.9%. Our hypothesis is based on data previously found for adults with type 2 diabetes: a) HbA1c improvements for people having an initial 9.0 to 9.5% will relate primarily to improving the fasting (overnight) glucose level, and b) HbA1c improvements for people having an initial HbA1c value of 7.0 to 7.5% will relate primarily to improving post-meal glucose levels. Having this information will help care-providers to better focus on how to help their patients with type 1 diabetes to improve their HbA1c levels, and to reduce the risk for later micro- and macro-vascular diabetes complications.
