European Diabetes Experts Highlight on Benefits of Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose Values
December - 4 - 2009
A group of European diabetes experts has issued a consensus statement on the benefits of self-monitoring of blood glucose values (SMBG). In the "Consensus Statement--A European Perspective," the panel recommends performing SMBG for all types of diabetes treatment approaches to achieve glucose control and values that are close to normal while controlling the risk of hypoglycemia. The experts, led by professor Oliver Schnell from the Diabetes Research Institute in Munich, emphasize that optimal frequency and patterns of SMBG always depend on a variety of factors, such as the type of diabetes, selected therapy, individually set targets of HbA1c, and pre- and postprandial blood glucose values.
