Chronic kidney disease increases the risk of atherosclerosis in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes

November - 6 - 2009

The Ottawa Hospital Diabetes Observational Study (OHDOS 1) retrospectively reviewed data from 568 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes to determine the relevance of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. A total of 21.1% of participants had CKD and 41.4% had MetS; and mean HbA1c levels were 7.4%. After a 6-year follow-up, CKD but not MetS was associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease risk (HR of 1.80). Therefore, the authors concluded that CKD is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes (Inoue, K. et al. 20th World Diabetes Congress (October 18-22, Montreal) 2009, Abst 0888).
