Data from 2,601 type 1 diabetes patients aged 5-23 years were analyzed to determine the correlation between glycemic control and quality of life among youths with type 1 diabetes; 20.1% of participants had poor glycemic control and 47.6% had intermediate glycemic control. When evaluating the results of a child self-report pediatric quality-of-life diabetes (PedsQL-DM) module, the investigators observed an association between glycemic control and PedsQL-DM scores, both in unadjusted and in adjusted linear regression models (p<0.0001). In addition, significantly lower PedsQL-DM scores were reported by girls and participants without private insurance. These findings indicate that poor glycemic control is significantly associated with poorer diabetes-related quality of life in young patients with type 1 diabetes (Lawrence, J.M. et al. 45th Annu Meet Eur Assoc Study Diabetes (EASD) (Sept 29-Oct 2, Vienna) 2009, Abst 53).
