Men Twice as Likely to Have Undiagnosed Diabetes

November - 4 - 2009

Men over 50 years of age are about twice as likely as women over 50 to have undiagnosed diabetes, researchers have found.  Out of more than 6,700 adults, ages 52 to 79, 22 percent of men were unaware they had the condition compared with 12 percent of women.  "The higher numbers of men with undiagnosed diabetes in this study may be explained by the fact that women go to their [general practitioner] more often and are therefore screened more often," said study leader Dr. Mary Pierce, from University College London.  The study was published in the journal Diabetic Medicine.
