In its first state-by-state review of new diabetes diagnoses, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the rate of diabetes has doubled in the United States in the past 10 years. More than 23 million Americans have diabetes, with 90 percent of those cases type 2 diabetes. The CDC said that about 1.6 million new cases were diagnosed in people 20 years or older last year. West Virginia had the highest rate, with 13 adults in 1,000 diagnosed with diabetes, while Minnesota had the lowest, at five in 1,000.
