Training Awards
The Training Award program supports postdoctoral fellows and students working towards doctoral degrees.

Due to budget constraints, the Clinical Scholar Award, Clinical Scientist Training Award and Mentor-Based Postdoctoral Fellowship Award are not being offered in 2013.


Applications for the ADA-CDA Joint Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, the Mentor-Based Postdoctoral Minority Fellowship Award and Minority Undergraduate Internship Award will be accepted. Please also visit the Targeted Awards page for additional available training opportunities.

American Diabetes Association/Canadian Diabetes Association Joint Postdoctoral Fellowship

Award Description:

The American Diabetes Association and the Canadian Diabetes Association initiated a joint partnership in support of a Postdoctoral fellowship. Applications from postdoctoral candidates in the US intending to train in Canada will be solicited. Additionally, Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada intending to go the US for training will be considered. Applications will be received and reviewed by the CDA Personnel Award Committee. For more details, please see section 7.3 Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award, item h. Clinical Scholar Award (CS)
Status:

Not offered for funding in 2013
Award Description:

These awards provide one year of research support to students interested in clinical and basic science diabetes research. Those working on an MD, PharmD, DPM or DO are eligible.
Support:

Awards are $30,000 a year for one year. Applicants may request up to $20,000 for the student's stipend and up to $10,000 for lab expenses. No indirect costs may be requested.

Clinical Scientist Training Award (CST)
Status:

Not offered for funding in 2013
Award Description:

This award supports MD, PharmD, DPM or DO students who are working on joint degrees. Eligible students are pursuing a dual degree in medicine, pharmacy, podiatric medicine or osteopathy and must be a research-oriented PhD, Master in Clinical Research, or Master of Public Health degree.
Support:

Awards are $30,000 a year for up to three years. Applicants may request up to $20,000 for the student's stipend and up to $10,000 for lab expenses. No indirect costs may be requested.

Mentor-Based Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (MN)

Award Description:

These awards are granted to established diabetes investigators to support a postdoctoral fellow. Applications must be initiated and completed by the mentor.
Support:

Awards are $45,000 a year for 4 years. The award is for the stipend support of a single fellow in a given year, as well as laboratory supplies and travel costs. All award expenses, including supplies and publication expenses, should revolve around the Fellow. No indirect costs may be requested.

Mentor-Based Postdoctoral Minority Fellowship Award (MI)

January 15, 2013 for July 1, 2013 funding
Award Description:

This award supports the training of minority scientists who are underrepresented in the field of diabetes research. In order to apply, the fellow must identify as an eligible minority defined under the terms of this award. Eligible minorities include: African American; Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino; American Indian or Alaskan Native; and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

Awards are granted to established diabetes investigators to support a postdoctoral fellow. Applications must be initiated and submitted by the Mentor.
Support:

Awards are $45,000 per year for 2 to 3 years. The award is for the stipend support of a single Fellow in a given year, as well as laboratory supplies and travel costs. All award expenses, including supplies and publication expenses, should revolve around the Fellow. No indirect costs may be requested.

Minority Undergraduate Internship Award (MUI)

Award Description:

Current ADA award holders are eligible to apply for an award to support a minority undergraduate intern to train in their laboratory or clinical setting. For the purposes of this award, eligible minority groups include: African American, Spanish, Hispanic or Latino, Native American or Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
Support:

Awards provide $3,000 of support for a one year term. Indirect costs are not permitted with this award.
