A primary goal of our program is to support the careers of young scientists. Our Career Development and Junior Faculty provide young scientists the salary and research support necessary to establish a track record of success that will allow them to get further funding from the NIH. We have other awards that match recent doctoral candidates with outstanding senior scientists to help them get started in research, and awards that provide clinical students a year of research experience before or after graduation. We also provide general grant support to both new and established investigators, specialized grants assisting clinical and innovative researchers, and opportunities for established investigators as they advance their careers and the field of diabetes research and care. With all of our award programs, our goal is to make a unique contribution that will accelerate the search for the prevention and cure of diabetes and its complications.

***ADA Research Funding 2010***
On behalf of the Officers and the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association, I wanted to provide our clinical and scientific research community with an update on the approved Research Program budget for the upcoming fiscal year. As a result of the significant challenges created by the economic downturn, the Association has based its budget on appropriately conservative revenue projections. Listed below are the key details for research funding in the upcoming year.
· The ADA National Board of Directors has approved a research budget in fiscal year 2010 identical to the 2009 research budget.
o This budget is constant with grant funding distributed in 2009 – and in part reflects the impact of reduced revenues for the Association in 2009
o Every effort is being put forth to both enhance new grant funding and increase total Association revenues.
· With this approved budget, our existing grant commitments, and our desire to fund ~15% of applications already received for new awards starting January 2010, the January 15, 2010 application cycle will be cancelled (for grants originally scheduled to begin funding July 1, 2010) with the exception of the following programs which remain open for application:
o Takeda Beta Cell Fellowships
o Merck Clinical/Translational Fellowships
o ADA-ASP Geriatric Innovation Award
o Henry Becton Innovation Award
o Mentor-based Minority Postdoctoral Fellowships
Please know that none of the decisions listed above were simple, nor were they made without significant discussion at the National Board and Committee level. We are well aware that this conservative approach to our budget will result in additional challenges for many of you, but trust that this will lead to the most sustainable research program in years to come. All of us at ADA and in the research community look forward to continued improvement in the economy with a goal of increasing grant funding in the near future – with restoration and growth of the full spectrum of ADA research initiatives. We welcome the health professional community’s help in our fundraising efforts to assist in our goal of funding the best in diabetes research.
